Piano Keyboard

So, which piano keyboard should I buy for my piano lessons?

To keep it simple, I would say there are 2 types of piano keyboards:

  • Weighted keys piano keyboard: they place some weight in each keys to make them similar to the touch of a real piano. I usually like these. Casio, Kurzweil and Yamaha all make weighted touch or keys piano keyboards. The pirce ranges from about $400 to over $3000. It really depends on your budget and what you intend to do with your music. What you also have to consider is the quality of the sound. Is it a piano sound that you like? Not what the saleman tells you sounds good. You need to feel good with the touch and the sound.
  • Soft touch keyboard: these piano keyboards don’t have weight in the keys. When you press on a key, it goes don’t very easily without resistance. There’s a whole lot of these keyboards and many of them are quite cheap ($150 and +). As a piano teacher, I’m fine if the students buy one of them. I rather they buy something they can afford and play piano than to postpone their progress because they didn’t buy a keyboard (unless of course they can get the money quite fast to buy a weighted keys piano). Now most synthesizers (an electric piano with a bunch of different sounds that you can edit and change is called a synthesizer) usually has an easy and soft touch. So make sure that in the purchase process that you are not paying for a synthesizer if you’re not going to play with all these sounds and effects. I say this because sometimes the synthesizer can be more expensive than just a plain electric piano keyboard with only the basic sounds.

Yes, there are more types but I just wanted to keep it simple for those who are looking for a piano keyboard for the first time and are probably just starting piano lessons.

I personally prefer weighted keys piano keyboards compared to the soft touch keyboards. It’s closer to the feel of a real piano.

So for your first trip to the music store, keep at least these two types of piano keyboards in mind. As you start shopping you will start to see better what’s out there and you will probably start to categorize them your own way by the time you buy a keyboard.

Hopefully this helped you in your shopping journey!
