Building up piano abilities!

Piano lessons in los angeles, CA — I’ve noticed over the years that if a student has fingers that move and ears that can hear, the student could learn piano. Goals dictate the speed of learning piano.

At college in the music faculty, we were sitting at our pianos between 4 to 6 hours a day. You do that for a few years and you get some interesting results.

Let’s say someone likes music and decides to take piano lessons. Alright. One of my first questions will be: “What are your goals concerning piano?” Some of the answer I get sound like this:

  • wanting to do piano for fun and take a piano book and being able to read and play it
  • improvisation is an answer I ofter get, learning the piano chords and improvising over them
  • because music relaxes them, some students will go for piano lessons for that aspect. I actually had several students taking lessons with this in mind and were doing quite well

From there we start building up piano abilities, focusing on what the student wants to reach and what he wants to communicate. Though I have my own piano program written down, I’m trying to give the student what he wants.

The student builds abilities by doing (practice) and having clear concepts of what is supposed to be done. It works the same way with kids or anyone else.

Music is way up there! It’s fun and creative. And, piano has the advantage to have a lot of music written for it. So to conclude, if we focus on what the student can do and keep reinforcing that, we (the student and the teacher) both win.
