Story of a piano teacher
Some information about me; a short biography — hopefully not too boring…
Biography
Piano: The Adventure!
I actually started playing guitar at 10 years old. I then slowly shifted towards piano and by the age of 15, piano was my main instrument. A year later, I was accepted at the St-Laurent Music College in Montreal, Canada, for classical training. While myself a student around 1988-1990, I started giving private piano lessons, though at that age I primarily wanted to perform. From 1990 to 1999, I concentrated my energy on performing.
Although I have a classical formation, jazz and improvisation always has been a big item for me. Great source of inspiration and discipline, I make sure my jazz and pop students play some classical piano during their journey
(unless force has to be applied…). I performed in several groups (ranging from disco big bands, jazz trios, pop groups, soul/funk groups, blues, and others), played piano solo, accompagnied many signers, etc.
Piano Teaching
My love for teaching was always present the whole time and in 1998, I started
making plans for teaching full time, right at 1999 start.
I mainly taught privately in my music studio but also at Rosemont College in Montreal.
Before my departure for Los Angeles, in 2002, I had over 50 students, several of them now playing
solo or in groups.
Over the years, I took pages and pages of notes on how I could deliver a more
efficient piano lesson. With these notes, I develop a whole technique that I now use during
the student’s piano lessons. I think learning piano helps more than the creative mind. With
a good technique, it helps living too.
